Match Report

A fine maiden half-century from James Rawlins formed the backbone of a successful run chase at Chislehurst & West Kent. The pace of Jonah Munday and Will Blease had earlier run through their top order with Akhil Anand, Hector Agnew and Dave Bowen helping restrict the home side to 134/7 in tricky conditions.

A overcast day and a damp wicket saw Captain Finn win the toss and put Chislehurst in. Knockers fans on the day included Mrs Ziggy, Harry's entourage and Barney the dog. Jonah opened with a maiden and Bleasey gradually built up to his lightning left handed seam at the other end. It didn't look easy going for the C&WK openers - who could clearly bat - Jonah's graceful action hides a sharp angle and searching line and he made the first breakthrough getting an edge, quickly followed by a firing Blease bowling the remaining opener having beaten the edge regularly. Another wicket apiece with both repeating their respective first wickets and Knockers spent the rest of the afternoon in the driving seat. It was a serious spell of bowling.

First change saw Akhil and Hector announce that they weren't there to help make up the runs. Akhers bowled three maidens, the last included a scalp thanks to Ziggy's sure hands at mid wicket. It is probably a good time to mention the afternoon for a certain D Harris, dropped off Akhil, caught off Hector (the first of three possible outs facing Aggers) and then called back after an appeal from the non-striker, Scott had him dropped behind and a back foot LBW turned down, all-in five different Knockers bowlers nearly have him as he nibbled his way to top score with 37.

It would be Ziggy that finally ended Harris' innings with a successful LBW appeal. It was Ziggy's battle with the left hander that really intrigued with a great contest played out, the southpaw was unbeaten but a second wicket came with Finn running around from extra cover to grab well. A tired looking Scott did little but help the score along before Harry tied up the other end leaving a low score to counter concerns over our chances on the same deck.

Hector's Tupperware surprise won tea with Jonah's Cornish pasty-Bakewell two courser a close second. Snellers continues to find new food resources in his bag.

John Mitchell and Scott opened amid a boisterous CWK close field. John's beautiful cut for four followed by a swift return to the hutch story got another chapter. Scott and James got us closer to double digits, mostly off the latter's bat. Finn came in and hit a breezy seventeen before Snellers went out and announced himself with two boundaries through square.

It is to Rawlins though that this batting tale belongs, a solid defence in still awkward conditions underpinned cuts, paddles and drives; he'd earned his fortune as a drop pushed a lofted drive over the rope to bring up his first fifty for the club. James looked well set for a red inker (if we did that sort of thing), his maiden six came with with a flourishing shot over cover and then one finally got through to end a fine knock. He'd seen Snellers go and Bleasey begin to build before departing with Knockers well set. Ziggy stepped in, survived on appeal having been given (a theme of the day) and we reached our target of 135 with around ten overs to spare.

The bar was well supported by both teams and thoughts began turning to 2021 and the club's 70th anniversary plans.
