Match Report
The Final game of the season has arrived after a long and eventfull summer of cricket.
The weather was a little blustery and after the toss knockers were put in to bat by Shipbourne.
Needing to post a good target on a green and unpredictable wicket with plenty in it for the bowlers, Knockers started well with a solid, if not speedy start from Seldon and Styles. The opening partnership happy to progress consistently, ticking over the runs as time went on.Seldon and styles taking the singles and waiting for the bad ball before smashing it to the boundery. After about an hour, the first wicket fell Styles bowled by a quicker ball getting under his bat for 54.Putting on 111 for the first wicket. Sam Druce-Smith came in at 3 and promptly returned to the pavilion for 2 runs. Seldon carrying on, hitting 11 fours and 1 six before being undone again by the fast spinner bowling from the pavillion end for 73. Mark Taylor now entered the fray on his debut, but was unable to flourish stumped for 1. This brought in form Boreham to the crease who batted well, lifting the run rate with typical bounderies and racing to 67 with 7 fours and 2 big sixes in his innings. Martin Goff was his able companion building a partnership of 89 before Boreham was dissmissed again to a bad dismissal on the last ball of the innings for a Knockers total of 231.
Confident that this total was going to be enough Knockers went on the attack with 4 slip and a gully for the bowling of Turner, who returned with figures of 7-1-30-2. With one catch being taken behind by Boreham. The pressure on the batsman from the tight field, forcing him into playing unsuitable shots. Opening from the field end Andy Darry bowled 10-0-50-2 able to retract some spin from the wicket and helped by the slight slant of the wicket from off to leg. He was replaced by son Ted Darry who also was able to find some turn in the wicket and bowled well for his figures of 7-0-48-1 and supported by Cowan 6-0-37-0. next on the bowling merry-go- round was Seldon who after his display with the bat, exceled further with the ball bowling a great line and length for great figures of 6-4-6-3. Finally, Miller bowled 2-1-7-1.
With such an attacking field for much of the game Shipbourne were able to get close to the target until the Knockers brought on Seldon who removed their opening Batsman short of his century. Now the runs dried up and Knockers were able to consistently take wickets until the final ball. Knockers needing to take a wicket from the last ball from Darry.A to win the game were denied the win by a generous 'Bump ball' decision. Reducing the outcome to a winnig draw.
