Match Report

Hot off the heels of the annual Knockers Tour, Team moral was high after a productive bonding session in Nottingham! Hurst green were the first team to face the Knockers.
A hot and sunny day was forecast and it did not disappoint a warmish 30 degrees by the time the first ball was bowled.
Knockers lost the toss and were asked to field, a less than desirable situation as we were still awaiting a couple of recruits.
With some temporary men Knockers took to the field D.Turner and K.Cowan opened the bowling an innovative approach adopted by captain A.Darry.
Hurst Green didn’t seem to be able to play the pair of the square. Tragedy struck in the second over whilst fielding off the bowling of K.Cowan, D.Turner pulled up clutching his hamstring an injury that was to blight his afternoon needless to say that was the end of his bowling spell after just one over, time to re-think!
P.Seldon took over down the hill from D.Turner with precision and pace and claiming his first wicket within a couple of overs it looked to be a good start.
K.Cowan continued up the hill with some accurate and testing darts!! P.Seldon took a break from the heat and J.Druce-Smith came on having had a stressful morning J.Druce-Smith took an over or two to get into his stride but found a good line and length and continued to test the batsmen.
B.Rumary came on up the hill giving K.Cowan a break by his stage although runs weren’t piling up wickets were needed as the batsmen were settling in to a rythmn.
B.Rumary started with a short length as is now customary and was dispatched accordingly. Having found a decent length and line Rumary did cramp the left hander and caused him a little pain! (Oh well if you can’t bowl them out Personal injury is the next best thing). Alas still no wickets.
H.Rumary was the man to break the deadlock with two wickets in two overs, it started to look more promising and with E.Darry showing his dad how it’s done Knockers looked to whittle the tail out.
Unfortunately even the reintroduction of P.Seldon couldn’t quite get through the tail and with a late flurry of runs from Hurst Green they finished their innings with 214 runs a little more than knockers really wanted to chase but we felt it was well within our reach and relished the chance to bat on what seemed to be a good flat batsmen’s wicket teamed with a short boundary on one side.
Knockers set about their task with the finesse and technique expected from the openers P.Styles and S.Seldon. They seemed to be playing themselves in nicely when P.Styles seemed to be beaten by a genuinely good ball and departed for 12.
Teaming The Seldon brothers is always a great sight in any knockers match and they duly responded with some trademark shots, quickly finding their feet and settling down to the job in hand, although the bowling was tight they were finding the gaps and the run rate was ticking along nicely.
S.Seldon eventually fell foul of the Hurst Green attack and was given LBW for 48 agonisingly close to that ½ century. P.Seldon remained and with fleeting appearances from G.Smith and J.Druce Smith continued to chase that total.
D.Turner came in at 6 with E.Darry as a runner due to his injury he picked up earlier in the game.
He batted well for his 12 before he tried to launch one into orbit and just mistimed it.
K.Cowan joined P.Seldon who by now had passed his ½ century it was looking a sticky situation we needed runs but another wicket down would swing the balance again.
The two batted imperiously, marching ever closer to the total, and with an ever- decreasing run rate to match the overs it was going to be a nail biting finish.
With H.Rumary in the wings waiting to take up the battle K.Cowan swung his weapon and unleashed a beautiful drive to the boundary to secure the win!
A fine and well-deserved victory for the Knockers much to the disgust of the Hurst Green Scorer who felt a miscarriage of justice had been carried out with amount of overs each side faced (Jog on)

And with the thought of Chilli Beef and Harvey’s in the same venue Knockers retired to the watering hole for post match de brief and contemplation!
