Having played schools cricket in County Durham and league cricket in the Tyneside Senior league before playing University cricket for Imperial College in one of the Middlesex leagues. I started off as a seam bowler before discovering batting abilities at university. I also played for Newcastle University in the UAU when I was a post graduate student. Joining Holmesdale in 1980 after moving to Kent I played for many years in the Kent League as a specialist batsman and captain. At the age of 35 I started to bowl off-spin on regular occasions and made my debut for Knockers in 1993 under the captaincy of Peter Lustig. I also played for Fort Halstead in the MOD ATHSOCIA cup which we won on 6 occasions in the 80s and 90s. These days I find that there are a number of batsman who still succomb to the Durham Dart.
